Access to the area
By road
The main entryway to Caniapiscau is the Trans Quebec-Labrador road (389-500). Expect a seven-hour drive from Baie-Comeau and eight hours from Goose Bay to reach Fermont. In winter, consult road conditions before driving.
Portrait of Road 389
Road 389 is a little over 550 kilometres. It links Baie-Comeau to Fermont and ends at the Quebec-Labrador border. The road extending north passes by the Manic-Outardes hydro complex, the Groulx Mounts, the Lake Jeannine mine site (closed in 1975), the site of what used to be the town of Gagnon, the mine site exploited at Fire Lake and the Mont Wright Mine (the only one still in operation). The beautiful landscapes and the grand scale of the hydroelectric installations along the way are breathtaking.
Safety
Since service stations are rare on Road 389, better take a few precautions before venturing onto it. Fill the gas tank every chance you get. There are three gas stations along the road; at Manic 2 (km 22), at Manic 5 (km 213) and at the Relais Gabriel (km 330). Always carry a good spare tire and everything needed to change it. Caution is essential when driving, since the number of bends in the road is impressive and they can at times surprise you. Consult road and weather conditions before taking Road 389.
